Here is a story the New York Times ran on former UCLA offensive coordinator Jay Norvell, who is now an assistant coach at Oklahoma. Here's one interested tidbit about Norvell's one season, which was Karl Dorrell's last as coach: Although Norvell was trained in the West Coast offense, it varied from the WCO Dorrell ran. Therefore, Norvell wasn't exactly an expert on the offense he was being asked to run. [end text]

Hoops post-game (172 clicks)
UCLA coach Ben Howland talked with the media, and he had lots of good things to say about the 69-46 pasting of Oregon State. He liked the way the Bruins attacked OSU's zone, first from the outside and then with interior passing. He was pleased with the defense by Nikola Dragovic and forward/center Drew Gordon's overall contribution.

One of the recruiting sites says Randall Carroll is not going to SUC and Cal is leading to get him. What are you hearing? Also, the big issue appears to be whether he plays WR or CB. Where do you see him playing at UCLA if he comes?

Even though Prince was running the scout team, did he still get to do position-specific drills using actual UCLA routes? Otherwise, I'm wondering how he's supposed to learn the offense if you think he's got a legitimate shot at starting in 09.

OK. Neuheisel has now been a Division 1 head football coach again for one season. Have you seen or heard of anything even remotely close to an NCAA violation, even a very minor one? Or has the program been squeaky clean for a year?

Ben Ball Warriors Cruise To A Convincing Win ... (158 clicks)
Well that was a fairly decent start to the Pac-10 season. Ben Ball warriors came out on fire to start the Pac-10 season blitzing the upstart and inspired Beavers bunch with a 19-4 run out of the gate. Since that hot start the Beavers never made it close as the Bruins put together a dominating 37-16 first half with an air tight and suffocating defense, crisp/patient and aggressive offense:

Spaulding Roundup: Coaching Notes (130 clicks)
Some news and notes on the coaching front to pass on to close out this Friday. If anyone was wondering about the working relationship between CRN and DW Dohn served up this answer on his blog: How was the relationship between coach RN and DW??? It was very good. Neuheisel let Walker do his thing, and Walker had autonomy over the defense. I don't think the relationship was a reason Walker left. He wanted to run his own program and believed he was ready to do so. s we have said many times already good luck to Walker

In Ben Howland's system, it's all about details (223 clicks)
Most of what the coach repeatedly tells players relates directly to the Bruins' trademark style of play. The first time Ben Howland reminded Drew Gordon to put on a sweatshirt after practice, Gordon didn't think much of it. Only later did the UCLA center realize his coach was dead serious about bundling up.

It looks like conference season is heating up around the country already as evident in some of early upsets suffered by UConn, Oklahoma, Louisville, and Purdue in losses just this week.
