More Bay Area Trip Notes: Monty's Candid Observations On Bruin "D" & "The Overlooked Factor" (105 clicks)

Ben Ball Gameday Roundup: Ill Communication In Howlandwood (88 clicks)
Well by now everyone knows about Tyler Honeycutt starting tonight's game at Haas Pavilion. The move by Coach Ben Howland caught most of us by (pleasant) surprise and it gives us something to look forward to in what appears to be (at least to me) essentially a hopeless trip to Bay Area this basketball season. From basketball perspective the move should help us because Honeycutt brings more athleticism, defensive intensity and rebounding skills to the table, however, reading through the reports today, there seems to be another issue hovering around the background of this program.

What Makes a Team Bad? (101 clicks)
A "common excuse" during Dorrell years: playbook was "too complicated". There are usually no easy answers to explain bad football teams as answers are usually more complex than simple excuses such as, "we don't have the talent", "our coaches are bad", "our playcalling sucks", "our team wasn't excited to play", "our coach made a few bad calls", "we did not make the correct adjustments", or in the case of the Raiders, "our owner won't die". I think that most of these are pretty superficial reasons - you can see them on gameday but their is often an underlying root cause.

[Updated] Getting Ready For A Hopeless Trip (76 clicks)
Over at California Golden Blogs, Avinash goes inside the numbers for UCLA's upcoming matchup against Bears. There is not much in there I can disagree with as he offers up the only bone for UCLA basketball fans: The big thing that could help UCLA is if Jorge Gutierrez can't suit up, which would force Christopher and Robertson into more defensive assignments on the talented Lee and maybe stretch the Cal rotations a little more.

However, the injury - which sidelined him early in preseason camp - has been nagging him lately, and it's starting to take its toll. After leading UCLA with 15 points in its 77-63 loss to Arizona on Saturday, Malcolm Lee was anything but happy. Going Through The Motions (90 clicks)
The day after another humiliating and dispiriting loss, this is what is bothering me the most about our basketball program. There is no passion and intensity in Howland's basketball program: Two days ago, Arizona was held to 30% shooting by USC (who from what I saw, played man-to-man defense.) Today, that same Arizona team shot 48.3%. You can’t convince me that the roster at USC is that incredibly athletically superior to ours, so I’m led to believe that the difference in defensive effectiveness comes down to effort, teamwork, desire, and coaching.

As hot as UCLA shot in the first half of its 72-70 win over Arizona State on Thursday, hitting 83 percent from the field and 80 percent from behind the 3-point line, the Bruins discovered how the other half lives on Saturday morning at Pauley Pavilion against Arizona. Apparently, the other half lives in a desolate wasteland of sorrow, no sun creeping through the clouds, dreary, bleak, cold. Howland...and the zone? (63 clicks)
A day after turning his personal history on its head and employing a 2-3 zone defense in a 72-70 win over Arizona State on Thursday, UCLA head coach Ben Howland reiterated that it was not part of a grand conspiracy or a wholesale change in his basketball strategy. But UCLA fans are happy to know that the Bruins have added it to their repertoire, as they prepare for today's 10 a.m. matchup with head coach Sean Miller's struggling Arizona Wildcats. "We may use it again," Howland said during a conference call with reporters on Friday. "We may use it (today). But I honestly had no plans to use the zone going into the game. I did see the first 15 minutes of our game, and the zone definitely helped us and against certain teams we'll use it again." Traditional Pac-10 powerhouses UCLA and Arizona have fallen on tough times this season, each team at 6-7, though the Wildcats have lost their lone conference game, to USC on Thursday. Each team has been forced to tinker with its system. In the Bruins' case, that means an upheaval to Howland's traditional man-to-man defense. Howland, however, quickly shot down the notion that Arizona State was simply shell-shocked against UCLA's zone defense; he simply thinks his team executed well. "They've seen plenty of zone, I think our guys did a good job in it," Howland said. "Eventually they started to attack it better. I'm just glad it gave us a lift when we went to it." The Bruins moved into the zone defense midway through the first half, as the Sun Devils were executing precision perimeter passing and seemed to be a step ahead of UCLA. The player seemingly most affected by the switch was Arizona State's Rihards Kuksiks, who had 15 points in the first half and zero in the second. UCLA senior guard Michael Roll said although the team did not devote much practice time to the new defense, the players were committed to being vocal on the floor. "We kind of know where everyone is at all times," Roll said. "They ran Kuksiks corner to corner, but we were talking about where he was if he was cutting middle. We knew where all their shooters were and we got out on them."
