Bruin Baseball Season Preview Part 2: Pitching (50 clicks)
While the Bruins are ranked #1 by Baseball America and have one of the nation's best teams, they are not perfect. While they will enter the season with one of the nation's best offenses, if not the best, they have a lot of question marks on the mound. The question marks are not talent related as the Bruins have quality arms up and down the rotation and bullpen. However, the pitchers the Bruins are expected to lean on haven't had to carry a team before and are unproven in the roles they will fill this season. Considering coach Savage is regarded as one of the nation's best pitching coaches there is no reason to believe the young and talented Bruin pitchers won't become talented and productive pitchers in 2008.

UCLA coach Ben Howland and several players are lamenting how the Bruins need to play better defense, and with good reason. Pac-10 opponents are shooting 45.1 percent against UCLA from the field, which would be the worst mark for the Bruins' defense since Ben Howland became coach.

Weekend warm-up: Last chance to make a run for the Gauntlet (102 clicks)
UCLA has gotten off to its usual miserable start in even-numbered years in the Lexus Gauntlet challenge against USC. Winners in each of the odd-numbered years, UCLA currently trails, 40-12 1/2, in the 2007-08 competition, with 57 1/2 points needed to win. The Bruins could mount a challenge, however, with a three-sport sweep in men's and women's basketball and women's swimming. Otherwise, forget it.

Howland on Love (63 clicks)
I asked UCLA coach Ben Howland if Kevin Love was open and teammates didn't see him during last week's trip to the Washington schools. "We'd like to get him more touches,'' Howland said. "Not just for him to shoot. A lot of times, just for him (to get the ball) because he's such a good passer. It would be nice, but I'm equally concerned about him continuing to improve as a defensive player. It's not just about offense. What we really hang our hat on here is trying to be a better defensive team.''

Here is the football notebook that was in today's paper. In addition, I was impressed by what JUCO transfer QB Kevin Craft did in the fall so he could achieve his associate's degree and enroll at a four-year school and take part in spring practice. "It was 18 (units) of academic classes, and they also count football as classes,'' Craft said. "They count football as classes, so it is one unit for lifting, one unit for practice, one unit for meetings. I was pretty focused. If I wasn't on campus at school, I would be with my dad watching film or at practice. If I wasn't there, I would be at home because it was so late.''

Kevin Love's desire to get more touches on offense has been a theme lately, and here's something else he said about it. "I've got to keep seeking the ball out. I've got to keep running plays, and that's really all,'' Love said. "They did have a guy behind me. (Washington) did have some double and triple teams, but other than that like felt I could have popped out, gotten on the wing a little more, seal my defender.'' Love said the desire to get the ball has nothing to do with shooting.

Today's notes (117 clicks)
Trying to inbounds the ball while standing in front of UCLA's bench with 46.6 seconds remaining, Washington's Tim Morris was running out of time. So he wound up, jumped and threw the ball off the defender, hoping to get it carom out-of-bounds. It worked, but only after smashing into the nose of UCLA's Alfred Aboya. While several of UCLA's players said it was part of the physical aspect of the game, UCLA coach Ben Howland took a step further after the fifth-ranked Bruins' 71-61 loss at Washington.
