Fargo no longer just the name of a movie (235 clicks)
Watched UCLA on Thursday and it's clear that the Bruins shouldn't be counted out as a potential Final Four team. The three seniors, Darren Collison, Josh Shipp and Alfred Aboya, have the experience of three Final Fours to help win close games. Shipp is playing the best basketball of his career, and if the Bruins can defend they can win. Aboya's parents came from Cameroon for the weekend games. It was their first time seeing Aboya play basketball or, for that matter, watching a basketball game.

Three Seniors: Marking Their Signature Moments As Ben Ball Warriors (145 clicks)
I have been thinking last few days about the moments and games involving these three seniors that stand out to me the most. It is very hard to come up with specific higlights considering how many big games they have won over the years on their way to conference championships, Pac-10 tourney championships and obviously the run to all those Final-4s. There are few moments though that stand out at least to me.

Re Toma: at the time he verbally committed, the story was that he was a diamond in the rough that the staff found viewing films, that he had tremendous leadership skills, etc. Knowing that you know now, was any of that true or was it all "spin." The thing about recruiting is coaches can often sell themselves on anything they want to. So, at the time, I have no problem believing the staff thought Toma was a diamond in the rough. But when they didn't get him, the story changes. It's rationalization at its finest.

Dragovic plays through illness (157 clicks)
UCLA forward Nikola Dragovic felt so sick on Friday, he ate only toast. Coach Ben Howland sent water and ginger ale for Dragovic that night, and he said that team trainer Carrie Rubertino Shearer put Dragovic on a special diet.

UCLA beats Cal to exorcise its road ghosts (176 clicks)
After stumbling all season in key road games, the Bruins finally get a big win away from home, as Darren Collison scores 16 points in the second half to rally them past the Golden Bears, 72-68. All the ghosts were in attendance. The bad memories from Texas. From Washington and Arizona State.

Nikola Dragovic plays well, despite not feeling well (159 clicks)
He contributes 12 points, including a big three-pointer, to Bruins' victory over Cal. The other UCLA players knew that Nikola Dragovic was truly sick when he begged off playing in the usual card game at the back of the team bus.

UCLA forward Dragovic stomachs through virus (146 clicks)
Nikola Dragovic bagged playing cards on the bus because he needed a bag to vomit in. Dragovic was the latest UCLA player to be hit with a stomach virus methodically pecking its way through the team, but the junior power forward recovered enough to score 12 points and grab seven rebounds in 34 minutes in Saturday's 72-68 win at California.

UCLA's Collison puts his own twist on victory (181 clicks)
Darren Collison used his speed to get the basket on a few plays, and was amazing in contorting his body while making a game-clinching 10-foot floater with 90 seconds left.

More Thoughts On Our Gutty Win & Looking Ahead To Oregon State (128 clicks)
What a difference a Sunday makes. Last week at this time things were looking gloomy around here after a tough loss at home. After two nail biting wins on the road the vibe has certainly changed. Again just like we can't get too down after tough losses, I would caution everyone getting too hyped up after a big win and start thinking about March.

Digger Phelps = A Wimpy Toolbag (200 clicks)
We already knew Digger is a wimp: You can also call him an idiot. What we didn't know was how much of a toolbag he really is:

UCLA @ Cal Video Highlights (139 clicks)
Darren Collison led all scorers with 22 and was clutch at the end to pull out the 72-68 win in front of the Berzerkleys. My vote for DC's best shot was the 15-foot fling with time running out on the shot clock and 1:26 left in the game.

Breaking Down The Pac 10's Final Weekend (129 clicks)
This is a rather complicated breakdown of what could play out this final weekend. I figured it would be a concise primer, but apparently, there are far more variables than I thought so you may want to pass on reading this.

California's Theo Robertson and Jerome Randle figure to stretch UCLA's defense. After facing what UCLA Coach Ben Howland described as a "barrage" of jump shots against Stanford two days ago, his team figures to see more of the same against California tonight in Berkeley.

Defensive rating rankles UCLA's Ben Howland (164 clicks)
The coach isn't happy that his team is eighth in the Pacific 10 Conference and No. 262 in the nation in defensive field-goal percentage. It isn't unusual for UCLA Coach Ben Howland to quote statistics from memory, right down to the decimal point, but this time the reference was pointed.

Ben Ball Gameday Roundup: Back On National TV (137 clicks)
Bruins are back on national TV as they take on Cal Bears in ESPN's Primetime telecast tonight. To call the venue hostile would be unfriendly. ESPN hosts have never been friendly to UCLA. Digger will be spewing his Bruin hatred, Lavin will be talking about unreasonable UCLA fans, and Hubert Davis will be bloviating about how over-rated the Bruins are (completely forgetting how many times Roy Williams and other ACC teams have choked in the NCAAs with all world talents according to the Eastern Sports Programming Network's ACC recruiting hype machine) this season.

Get Well Soon Coach (130 clicks)
John Wooden is recovering from pneumonia, and the 98-year-old basketball coaching great is expected to be released from the hospital soon. UCLA, the school Wooden coached to 10 national titles, said Friday he was admitted to a Los Angeles-area hospital Feb. 13 and is completing his recovery. "My father is doing well," said Nan Muehlhausen, Wooden's daughter. "His lungs are clear and he has been eating well. We expect him to be released soon."

Random Thoughts On Consistency (119 clicks)
Consistency may be the hobgoblin of small minds and academics -- but I think our biggest challenge can be summed up in one word CONSISTENCY. We don't bring all we have, every game, all the time. Or for 3/4 of the time. If we did, we'd not have to play from behind or be in close games (which run the risk of bad calls from the SPTR's).

Washington's 83-78 win today against Arizona means the Huskies clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 regular season title, and they can win it outright by defeating Washington State next Saturday. U-dub's win win also means UCLA's string of outright Pac-10 titles is over at three straight.

Grad assistants (138 clicks)
I was asked during the Q&A about who would be UCLA's graduate assistants, and I am told Phil Rauscher will be back for his second season on the offensive side and Clark Lea will be the defensive graduate assistant. Lea was with UCLA in 2006, but was at South Dakota State the last two seasons. He is returning to UCLA for 2009. The bios are from the 2008 season. [end of tex]
