The Love Question (204 clicks)
Everybody's been ooh-ing and aah-ing over Kevin Love's half-court and full-court shots in this video taken at practice just before UCLA ran into the Memphis massacre. Are they his last as a Bruin? In today's projections from NBADraft.net, Love could go to Philadelphia as the 17th pick. He has until April 27 to declare that's he's going pro, but could change his mind again up until June 16 (provided he doesn't hire an agent).

2009 Recruiting (Part 1) (182 clicks)
Last year at this time, the Bruins had seven verbal commits. Not just scrubs either, those commitments came from some dynamic prep players like Rahim Moore, EJ Woods, Damien Holmes and Anthony Dye. This year? Just three. Across town, USC has already snagged ten commits in the 2009 class and that includes one of the best players in the country in quarterback Matt Barkley. So what's the hold-up in Westwood? Well there are a number of reasons.

AA2 sounds like a very smart man. My hunch is after its all said and done AA2 will be back. IIRC he is projected to finish his political science courses by this June. Since he wants to be "the President" of Cameroon someday, it makes a lot of sense for him to stick around for one more year, and do graduate studies next year at UCLA. IIRC that's the course Donnie Edwards (the great Bruin LB from early 90s) did in his fourth year, and it worked out well for him.

The Gauntlet is in play! (170 clicks)
n the dead of winter, UCLA trailed USC in the Lexus Gauntlet standings by a score of 50 to 12 1/2, with 57 1/2 points needed to win. USC has won the Gauntlet in each of the even-numbered years (2002-04-06) in which it has been awarded and the Bruins have won in all odd-numbered years (2003-05-07), and it looked like that would continue. But like Lazarus, the Bruins have risen. Going into this weekend's crucial baseball series with USC, UCLA has closed the gap. It is now 45 points to 32 1/2, which requires some explanation.

Stewart came down awkwardly and was wheeled off on a golf cart. He hadn't played much - if at all - over the last six games. Stewart is averaging 2.9 points in 11 minutes.

Spring Practice Begins (107 clicks)
Yesterday was the start of spring practice. It always takes a few days to work out the kinks and with an entirely new offensive staff, it will likely take a bit longer this time around. Still, the promise of a simplified offense and a focus on fundamental football, should pay some dividends over the next few weeks.

More Notes re. Strategery v. Memphis (159 clicks)
Let's continue to look into matchup issues against Memphis Tiger. Andy Glockner from the WWL attempted to find "UCLA's hidden truth" and discovered that we have the "worst offense of Final Four teams." How bad is our offense? We are only ranked seventh in the nation measured by kenpom.com. Glockner sounds dismissive of our offense comparing it to other three teams, which finished in the top-4. Well not sure what exactly is Glockner's standard of excellence. But over here no one is going apologize for sending a team that has the combination featuring the second best defensive unit in the country (best among the Final-4 teams) and a top-10 offense, after going through a true round robin schedule of one of the best conferences in the country.

UCLA scouting report (216 clicks)
You can't beat the Bruins' experience -- three straight trips to the Final Four -- but it's fair to doubt them after they were dominated the past two years by taller, tougher Florida teams. Memphis, the Bruins' opponent Saturday, is a lot Florida: The tall, athletic Tigers come at you in waves.

Memphis scouting report (188 clicks)
The Tigers raised their defensive intensity to another level in a pair of impressive victories in the South Region in Houston. Their guards used their length to disrupt passing lanes and alter shots, and they took advantage of turnovers to start quickly against both Michigan State and Texas. They're playing smart with the basketball -- only seven turnovers against Texas -- and making intelligent passes. This team is playing with the utmost confidence, and that's showing on court. Memphis did not show any weaknesses this past weekend.

Now that we have set our markers on expectations heading into this weekend let's start compiling files on our next opponent. Once again we don't think it is prudent to theorize on what we need to do hang banner number 12. That would be precisely the wrong thing to do. Instead everyone should get in the mindset of who we are playing, giving them their due respect, and discuss what our guys need to do get themselves prepared and ready for the next game.
