2009 Recruiting (Part 1) (197 clicks)
Last year at this time, the Bruins had seven verbal commits. Not just scrubs either, those commitments came from some dynamic prep players like Rahim Moore, EJ Woods, Damien Holmes and Anthony Dye. This year? Just three. Across town, USC has already snagged ten commits in the 2009 class and that includes one of the best players in the country in quarterback Matt Barkley. So what's the hold-up in Westwood? Well there are a number of reasons.

Intensity (139 clicks)
Intensity was the word used to describe the first full day of pads on Saturday. I try not to put too much weight into these types of "bigger, stronger, faster" reports because they come in every season from us fans. But if the beat writers see a dramatic change in pace then I'll put a little more stock into it.

Another DB Commits (133 clicks)
The Bruins, and coach Walker, got their 3rd commit of the season late Friday, in Mission Viejo defensive back, Alex Mascarenas. The 5' 10" 175lb junior has been a stand out player since his sophomore season. He has offers from both Arizona schools, Utah, and Colorado.

Learning curve (185 clicks)
It's taking a little while for the offense to come around, which is to be expected considering UCLA is installing its fourth offense in as many years. The good news is, the veteran offensive players have been through this before and know how to maintain their patience with the situation. ``It seems like every year we get a new OC and we have to learn a new offense,'' wide receiver Marcus Everett said. ``It's the same schemes and everything, just new terminology. As soon as we get the terminology down and start speaking the same language, we'll be OK.

Every time I ask tight end Logan Paulsen about his hair the story gets better and better. First, he said that he hasn't cut his hair since freshman year, save for the occasional trim to clean things up. Then today, he said that at some point, he's going to cut his hair and donate it to charity.

Mission Viejo High safety commits to UCLA (164 clicks)
The Times' UCLA beat writer, Chris Foster, reports that Mission Viejo High safety Alex Mascarenas today made a verbal commitment to UCLA. The 5-11 1/2, 170-pound junior had scholarship offers from Arizona, Colorado and Utah, according to Scout.com. Foster also can play cornerback, and was the only sophomore on the 2006 All-CIF Pac-5 team.

"I'll know it when I see it'' (185 clicks)
Five quarterbacks took snaps for UCLA on the first day of spring practice, and for the first few practices at least, all five are in the running to be the starter. Most likely though, the race will come down to Ben Olson, Patrick Cowan and JuCo transfer Kevin Craft.

Spring Practice Begins (124 clicks)
Yesterday was the start of spring practice. It always takes a few days to work out the kinks and with an entirely new offensive staff, it will likely take a bit longer this time around. Still, the promise of a simplified offense and a focus on fundamental football, should pay some dividends over the next few weeks.

The rain held off long enough to get a full day of practice in. Chow story (188 clicks)
For those that wondered, a story on how Norm Chow will influence UCLA's offense will run in Thursday's paper as a precursor to spring practice. Everyone I talked to about Chow and his influence used some form of the word "simplistic" in describing his style. By the way, when I talked to Chow, I asked him if he ever thought he would be UCLA's offensive coordinator.

Readying for FB (170 clicks)
I was on campus yesterday and happened to catch some of UCLA's offseason conditioning workout, and I was impressed by the tempo and energy of it. The approach, at least on this day, was one of quickness and hustle, with coaches imploring players to "sprint" from drill to drill. One player I can't wait to see is red-shirt freshman safety Glenn Love.

Rick's debut now v. Tenn. on ESPN prime time (134 clicks)
Neu's debut will be nationally televised, on primetime, on a Monday night? Think the Rose Bowl is going to be rockin'? I know our minds are elsewhere right now, but I think this is a huge development, will give the program great exposure, and is reflection of how CRN already has our program back into the national spotlight.

Monday Night Football! (132 clicks)
It looks like the Tennessee game might be played on Monday Night football. There is talk that the game is being moved up a week from Sept 6th to the prior Monday on Sept 1st (which is labor day). Since the current schedule has Fresno State on August 30th, that game is also likely to move to another slot. The bulldogs have been looking to change that game time anyways, so a Sept 20th bye-week could be a candidate.
