After springing ahead, Bruins don't want to fall back (80 clicks)
As spring practice comes to an end, it's apparent that the Bruins, with Kevin Prince poised to take over at quarterback, should be better than last season's 4-8 team. But how much better? UCLA ends spring practice with its spring game at the Rose Bowl tonight at 7. Here are five things that are apparent after four weeks of workouts:

That early college try (73 clicks)
Quarterbacks Richard Brehaut at UCLA and Matt Barkley at USC are among a growing number of 'greenshirts' who finish their senior year early so they can join their college teams for spring practice. The young quarterback rolled out and found himself, quite suddenly, alone. No linemen blocking, no receiver breaking open, only tacklers bearing down.

Is there really competion for playing time in football or is it just lip service? Some starters were named even before spring practice began, Kai Maiva for example. Pete Carroll uses competion as motivation, does Rick Neuheisal? Every position is open for competition, but sometimes it is clear who will win the competition. If Jake Dean out-performed Maiava in spring practice, UCLA would play Dean. It's just that track record and talent often suggest who will be the starter long before it plays out on the field.

Coach Neuheisel recently commented that offensive players gave poor effort. Is this something you are seeing at Spring practice? Or is this more of a case of lacking offensive talent (both at the skill positions and the OL)? The effort has nothing to do with the skill level of the offense. I've seen plenty of terrible players give incredible effort. And, yes, it is not hard to see when a player doesn't finish a play, or he goes through it at half-speed.

If seems like the offense, particularly Prince, has regressed over the past week or two. Are the coaches concerned or are the players simply tired?? The coaches are concerned, but only mildly, because there are a lot of key players out, and a few key linemen won't be in until the summer. And I don't think the offense has regressed. It actually performed better in the second scrimmage than the first scrimmage, according to the staff.

Not saying this is the case with Prince, but have you in your experience seen QB's who took care of their business in practice but could not translate that into success on game day? Not really. Usually, if you perform well in practice it translates into the game.
