UCLA dropped out of the top 25 this week. West Virginia was the only major upset, but they were able to stay in the Top 25. I guess the pollsters had to make room for Cal and ECU (who both definitely deserve to be in the top 25.

A day after holding a team meeting to warn UCLA's players about complacency after a big win - a bugaboo during the Karl Dorrell era - new coach Rick Neuheisel had harsh words for some unnamed players about a lack of effort during Thursday's practice.
"We have to make sure we're into the toughness part of this game," Neuheisel said. "It looked to me like there were a couple of culprits of tuning it down, not really wanting the contact piece of it.

Thanks to our BYU-Washington game this weekend can go ahead and get started with compiling our notes on BYU. UCLA as a team of course very familiar with the Cougars given what took place last year in Vegas and at the Rose Bowl. Bronco Mendenhall’s team are now on a 12 game winning streak, which is the longest in the nation. They have been thinking about BCS Bowl games this off season and for them to get there they will have to get it done starting this weekend against the beleaguered Huskies in Seattle and then against our Bruins at Provo.

Cross Country Begins 2008 Campaign On Saturday At UC Irvine Invitational (133 clicks)
The men's and women's cross country teams will kick off the 2008 season on Saturday at the UC Irvine Invitational. The women will run in the "A" race at 8:40 am, while the men will follow in the "A" race at 9:10 am. Some of the teams slated to compete with UCLA include Fresno State, Cal Poly SLO, CSUN and UC Irvine.

Taylor Embree: 0.5 Star prospect. UCLA’s Best Wide Receiver? (202 clicks)
Well, based on the Tennessee game, it’s not that much of a stretch. Embree, led all wide receivers with 53 yards along with 4 receptions. He also had the longest reception of the night, hauling in a 21-yard-pass. Embree, quite simply, catches everything. Neuheisel even joked, “Taylor, why not catch everything thrown to you?†after a particularly tough barrage of catches. Embree, a coaches son, was seemingly born to catch footballs.

The Mark Eaton Story Is In Pre-Production (195 clicks)
For those who don't, Mark was a 7-4 mechanic who was discovered by the basketball coach at Cypress College. After two seasons at the JC, he joined the Bruins, playing one season under Larry Brown and another for Larry Farmer. Famously -- or infamously -- Farmer didn't let the senior Eaton travel on the Bruins last road trip to Washington (back in the day when the conference limited the number of players who could travel). Farmer had little interest in a senior reserve and wasn't particularly fond of JC transfers either. So, Farmer left Mark home and traveled with freshmen centers Stuart Gray and Brad Wright.

So like I was saying, Rick Neuheisel is the greatest UCLA coaching hire ever, Norm Chow is not just an offensive genius but a miracle worker and Kevin Craft is the greatest JC transfer since O.J.Simpson.
Patience is supposed to be the key word when you start a new program, and Neuheisel will ultimately receive it, but Monday night he managed to accelerate expectations with one of the more improbable victories seen around here in years.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a guy flip-flop from "grossly overmatched" to "coolest cat in the room" so dramatically in real life before. UCLA QB Kevin Craft threw the ball so directly at Tennessee players the first half, you had to wonder if he was color blind, specifically mis-reading burnt orange and powder blue.

Bruin Blocking Keys Four-Set Victory Over Hawai'i (134 clicks)
The Bruins recorded 18 blocks on Sunday against Hawai'i, so it was only fitting that a roof clinched the match for sixth-ranked UCLA, which won a nail-biter with the 12th-ranked Rainbow Wahine in four sets. Scores were 23-25, 25-23, 26-24, 30-28.

Third-Ranked Women's Soccer Blanks No. 6 Portland, 1-0 (140 clicks)
